Verizon for International Students: New Number Checklist

Verizon for international students: separate a new US number from your home number, then check signup, device compatibility and offer requirements.

Checked against official pages on October 26, 2026. Rules move; when this one does, it goes on the changelog.

Arriving with a +86 or +91 number? Keep it with your home carrier and arrange a separate US line. For Verizon postpaid, check the phone, the account application and the student offer as separate questions. If approval is still unresolved, compare the prepaid routes before you count on a Verizon postpaid line.

Account type: this page covers Verizon postpaid wireless and the student discount. Verizon Prepaid, Total by Verizon, and a data-only eSIM are different products. The Verizon One bundle is on Verizon One for student apartments; that bundle has its own BYOD built-in eSIM requirement, which does not apply to every Verizon line.

What should be ready before you land?

The three columns have different jobs. Do not treat a data eSIM as a US phone number, and do not cancel the home number to make room for one.

Stage Home-country number US new number Temporary data
Before you fly Check the home carrier's retention rule and next recharge or activity date. The China page and India page carry those rules. Check the exact phone model, carrier lock, and whether it supports the active SIM combination you need. Buy a separate data eSIM only if you need maps or messages before the US line works.
Landing day Keep the home SIM active for the accounts that already use it. Check whether the home carrier requires roaming for incoming texts, and turn it on if it does. Start the US line application or activation. Have identity documents ready, but their acceptance is unverified. Use the data eSIM for maps, rides, and email. It does not supply the US number a bank or university may ask for.
If postpaid is blocked Keep the home number active. Do not port it to the US. Compare no-SSN prepaid, Verizon Prepaid, and the student plan comparison. Keep the data eSIM as data. Use the bank's app or email approval channel instead of assuming a code will arrive.
What this gives you A working home number and a retention date to record A US line, or a documented next step if approval is unresolved Data on landing day, not a phone number

If the phone cannot hold both lines at once, the home number stays in the old phone or in a home-carrier app, but the app may not receive every text. Keep the SIM in a phone if you need SMS. A phone that stores an eSIM profile does not necessarily keep two lines active at the same time. Check the exact model and purchase market with both carriers before you rely on dual-SIM. Those device checks are on foreign phone on Verizon.

Does a home number become a US number?

No. The two numbers have different jobs, different bills, and different rules. A new US line does not keep the home number alive, and porting a US number is not how you hold a +86 or +91 number.

What you have What it can do What it cannot do by itself Next step
A home-country number only Stay with your home bank, government services, and family Become a US number, or give you a US line for a bank or university Keep it with the home carrier; add a separate US line
A home-country number and a new US line Give each number a separate job and a separate bill Make the home number cheaper or automatic Record both retention dates and both bills
An existing US number Become a candidate for a transfer to Verizon Guarantee that the number or the old account will release it Use switch to Verizon and check eligibility first
A data eSIM only Provide data on landing day Supply a US phone number for verification Use it as data, not as your bank or university number

Verizon's porting FAQ says it accepts most phone numbers, but some may not be eligible based on geography, service-area coverage, technology, or ownership of the line. The official checker is the answer for a specific number. A new line and a port-in are different transactions, with different offers and different first bills.

What are the four checks?

Check What is confirmed What stays unverified Where to check
US number You need a new line or an eligible transfer. Verizon says most numbers can transfer, but not all. Whether your exact number is eligible Verizon's number checker or switch to Verizon
Device The phone must be carrier-unlocked, and its hardware and software must be compatible with Verizon's network. The BYOD check uses the device ID. Whether your exact model passes, and whether it supports the active dual-SIM combination you need Verizon's BYOD FAQ and the official compatibility checker
Account A postpaid application is separate from the number and device checks. Device financing through Nova Credit using international credit ended on April 11, 2025. The current identity documents, deposit, and approval conditions for an international student Verizon's application channel; no-SSN prepaid for the separate prepaid comparison
Offer Verizon advertises a student discount for eligible college and graduate students, with ID.me verification and an account owner or manager requirement. Whether international students qualify, and whether the discount applies to the exact plan Verizon's student page and the checkout terms

A student discount does not fix a blocked account application. A compatible phone does not make a number eligible to transfer. Check each row separately.

What does Verizon require for signup?

The Verizon pages linked on this page do not list the current identity documents, deposit, or approval conditions for an international student opening a postpaid account. Those rules are unverified. Ask Verizon which documents it accepts now, and record the answer and date. Do not send an SSN, passport image, IMEI, or account number to Still Reachable.

The Nova Credit notice closes one route. Verizon says the option to finance Verizon phones using international credit through Nova Credit is discontinued as of April 11, 2025. That notice is about device financing. It does not say that every no-SSN account application is impossible, and it does not supply a replacement credit path. Old guides that still present Nova Credit as current are out of date.

Prepaid is a different account type with its own terms. The no-SSN page compares carriers that publish no credit check, and Verizon Prepaid keeps the prepaid plan details separate. Do not assume the student discount applies to a prepaid line.

Which student discount applies?

The Verizon student page was read on October 26, 2026. The offer has a wider scope than a single "10% off mobile" line, and it does not replace the account or device checks.

Question What the Verizon student page says
Who qualifies College and graduate students actively enrolled, including online enrollment, at a U.S. post-secondary institution, including undergraduate, graduate, or vocational study. The offer is good for a maximum of four years while annual eligibility reviews are met, and up to 12 lines.
Account role The student must be the account owner or account manager
Verification Eligibility is checked through ID.me and must be verified every 12 months
Mobile scope 10% off select Unlimited mobile plans. The Simplicity example is for new customers and requires Auto Pay and paper-free billing, enrollment within 30 days, the Switch & Save discount (a smartphone port-in or an uploaded mobile bill from an eligible carrier dated within the past 45 days), plus taxes and fees, for personal lines only. The 10% is applied to each eligible line.
Home internet scope 10% off Fios home internet. The Fios 300 Mbps example requires Auto Pay and paper-free billing; a $99 setup charge may apply, and credit approval or a deposit may be required.
Stacking The student page says the discount can combine with other offers, excluding teacher, nurse, first-responder, and military discounts, and with the Mobile and Home Discount. The Fios example also says one offer per account and cannot be combined with most offers.
International students The fine print names a U.S. post-secondary institution; the page does not mention international students or a separate US school ID requirement, so that eligibility is unverified
Verizon One The One FAQ is a separate product page. Do not subtract the 10% from the One price without written confirmation; see Verizon One.

The page's examples are not universal student rates. The exact mobile plan, line type, home internet tier, Auto Pay status, and bill charges still decide whether the discount applies.

What should you confirm before choosing a plan?

Keep this record on your own device. The right-hand column says what a complete answer should cover.

Ask Verizon What to record
Which account type is this: postpaid wireless, prepaid, or a mobile and home bundle? The product name and whether the student discount is attached to it
Which identity documents do you accept from an international student? Each document named, and whether a US address or US school document is required
Is a credit history, SSN, or deposit required? Yes, no, or conditional, with the exact condition
Does the student discount apply to this exact plan? The plan name, the discount, and whether it stacks with the line or bundle
Is my phone unlocked and compatible? The checker result and the date you ran it
Does this exact model and purchase market support the active dual-SIM combination I need? The model number, the supported SIM combination, and the result with both services active
If I keep my home number, what does my home carrier require? The retention rule, the next recharge or activity date, and whether roaming is needed
Is this price for a new number or a port-in? Which transaction the price belongs to, and the offer's eligibility
Is the price after Auto Pay? What is the first-month price? Both figures and every condition attached to them
What is the total for my line count, and what happens if I leave early? The per-line arithmetic, taxes, activation or upgrade fees, device balance, and plan term

What if postpaid approval is not resolved?

Use the prepaid route instead of waiting without a working number. The no-SSN page separates a credit check from an SSN and from the identity document a carrier accepts. Verizon Prepaid is a different account type from the postpaid student offer. The student plan comparison covers prepaid plans with a US number, data, and calls home. A data eSIM can cover data on landing day, but it is not a substitute for the US number.

Still unverified

  • Which passport, visa, I-20, or other documents Verizon accepts from an international student today
  • Whether a deposit or US credit history is required for a postpaid account, and how the application treats a new arrival
  • Whether the student discount is open to international students, and whether it applies to Verizon One or a specific mobile plan
  • Whether your exact phone supports the active dual-SIM combination you need until you check the model and both carriers
  • Whether a specific home-country bank will deliver a code to either number

The new-number confirmation sheet is the blank record for this page. The blank CSV is here. The filled teaching example is a PDF and a CSV.

If you already have a US number, start with switch to Verizon. If postpaid approval is unresolved, use no-SSN prepaid. If the apartment also needs home internet, compare Verizon One after checking the lease. Published plan prices are on the phone plan comparison. If the decision also includes buying a phone, the cost frame is Verizon BYOD versus a new phone.
