Foreign Phone on Verizon: Unlock, IMEI and SIM Checks

Using a foreign phone on Verizon? Check the exact model, carrier lock, network compatibility and physical SIM or eSIM support before choosing a plan.

Checked against official pages on October 29, 2026. Rules move; when this one does, it goes on the changelog.

A foreign phone on Verizon needs two separate things: the device must be unlocked, and its hardware and software must be compatible with Verizon's network. An unlocked phone is not automatically a phone that works on Verizon. A phone bought in another country can satisfy one and fail the other.

This page is the device side of a Verizon decision. The account side is on Verizon for international students, and the port-in side is on switch to Verizon with an existing number. The plan price is on the phone plan comparison.

Record the exact model and sales market

Start with the model number printed in the phone's settings or on its packaging, not the marketing name. Record the sales market and the exact model identifier. “I bought an iPhone” or “I bought a Samsung” is not enough. Compatibility is decided by Verizon's check against that exact device, not by the marketing name.

Do not enter an IMEI into this site. The record sheet linked below has fields for the model, market, lock status and SIM type, but no field for an IMEI. The actual device check belongs on Verizon's official page, where the result is tied to the carrier's current system. A model number and a country are useful for the record; they are not an activation decision.

Separate carrier lock, network compatibility and SIM capability

These are three different questions:

Check What it means What it does not prove
Carrier lock The phone accepts only the carrier that locked it, or it accepts another carrier's SIM after unlocking That the unlocked phone supports Verizon's network bands
Network compatibility The hardware and software are compatible with Verizon's network That Verizon will approve a specific line or account
SIM capability The phone has a compatible physical SIM slot or eSIM, and the profile can be installed That the phone is unlocked or compatible

Verizon's BYOD page says a carrier-locked device will only work on that carrier's network. It also covers eSIM and dual-SIM devices, and says some carriers lock their devices. After the old carrier unlocks a device, Verizon says it can take up to 24 hours before activation with Verizon.

An eSIM is not a bypass around a lock or a compatibility problem. A dual-SIM phone can hold a home-country line and a US line at the same time, but the US profile still has to be compatible with the phone and accepted by Verizon. The SIM versus eSIM decision is on SIM, eSIM, or a US prepaid plan.

Use the official device checker

Verizon's BYOD page links to its device compatibility check. Use that page with the exact model or device ID it asks for. This site does not proxy the check, does not collect the IMEI and does not turn a model name into an approval.

The official check can still leave questions:

  • Whether the exact model and device ID pass Verizon's compatibility check.
  • Whether the phone is carrier-locked and whether the old carrier will unlock it.
  • Whether the phone supports the physical SIM or eSIM profile you want to use.
  • Whether the account and number task are eligible, which is a separate approval.

A “compatible” device result is about the device. It is not an account approval, a credit decision or a promise that every Verizon plan can be activated on that phone.

Read the result without assuming approval for every plan

Keep the device result and the plan result in separate columns. A phone can pass the compatibility check and still fail a plan's requirement, a promotion's eligibility or an account check. A phone can also be compatible with the network but not with the specific SIM or eSIM process you chose.

If the phone fails the check, do not buy a plan first and hope. The device record sheet is for collecting the facts before you pay: device check record. The blank CSV is here, and the fictional filled example is available as a PDF and a CSV.

Exact model, sales market, lock status, network compatibility and SIM capability are five different fields. Verizon's checker answers the carrier-side device question; it does not answer the account question. If you are bringing a phone and want to compare the cost of keeping it against buying a new one, use Verizon BYOD versus a new phone.
