Keep your VinaPhone number active while abroad
Keep your VinaPhone number active abroad: outgoing service stops first, ten days follow to top up, and the number is reused 45 days after the two-way lock.
Checked against official pages on September 28, 2026. Rules move; when this one does, it goes on the changelog.
Rule at a glance
prepaid and postpaid- If you do nothing
- Outgoing service stops when the account's validity ends, and a top-up inside ten days restores it
- Cheapest way to hold it
- A top-up inside the ten-day window
- Roaming needed to receive codes abroad
- Unverified (The policy page describes the lock stages, not whether a message reaches the SIM abroad; VinaPhone's roaming pages are the place to check that)
- Twelve months away, roughly
- The page publishes no single yearly figure; it says each prepaid subscriber's validity depends on the plan and the top-up denomination
VinaPhone is the one Vietnamese carrier whose published policy our clients could read, and the page does something unusual: it separates the part of the deadline that comes from state regulation from the part the carrier adds on its own. That split is the shape of the paying clock.
The stages, in the carrier's words
The account's validity runs out first, and the first thing that stops is the outgoing direction, which leaves incoming calls and messages working. VinaPhone's policy page states the window that follows: "Sau khi bị ngừng cung cấp dịch vụ một chiều (đi), thuê bao có 10 ngày duy trì liên lạc và chờ nạp thêm tài khoản để (mở đủ hai chiều đi, đến) tiếp tục sử dụng."
Ten days is the whole of the first window, and a top-up during it restores the line. On day eleven the second lock begins, on the same page: "Thuê bao sẽ bị ngừng cung cấp dịch vụ hai chiều (đi, đến) trong trường hợp không thực hiện nạp tiền vào tài khoản trong vòng 10 ngày duy trì liên lạc nói trên, tức thuê bao sẽ bị ngừng cung cấp dịch vụ hai chiều ngay vào ngày thứ 11 sau khi bị ngừng cung cấp dịch vụ một chiều (đi)."
Two-way means both directions, so incoming service stops on day eleven. The page does not say a code sent after that waits to be delivered. Smart in the Philippines keeps incoming traffic alive for its whole window, which is a different rule.
Forty-five days, of which fifteen are the carrier's own
After the two-way lock the clock is described in two parts, and VinaPhone's page names which is which: "Sau khi bị ngừng cung cấp dịch vụ hai chiều (đi, đến) thuê bao có 30 ngày giữ số theo quy định hiện hành của CQQLNN và VINAPHONE cho phép thuê bao có thêm 15 ngày chờ khôi phục số và làm lại số." Thirty days attributed to current state regulation, then fifteen more days granted by VinaPhone, during which the subscriber can restore the original SIM at a transaction point.
The forty-five days start at the two-way lock, so a count that begins when validity ends reaches reuse on day 56. The restoration during the last fifteen days is in person: the same page lists what to bring, including "Chứng minh thư chính chủ", the SIM itself or its ICCID, and a restoration request form. A number cut off abroad depends on someone being able to appear at a transaction point with those.
At the end of the forty-five days, the policy page states the outcome without cushioning: "Sau thời hạn 45 ngày (30 giữ số + 15 ngày chờ khôi phục), nếu chủ thuê bao không đến ĐGD để khôi phục số đã bị ngừng cung cấp dịch vụ hai chiều, VINAPHONE thực hiện hủy thuê bao và tái sử dụng số trên hệ thống quản lý và khai thác dịch vụ."
The postpaid side, counted from the unpaid bill
A postpaid VinaPhone line is suspended in stages over money owed. The policy page states a seven-day payment window, then partial suspension of outgoing calls, outgoing SMS and data, then full suspension fifteen days after that partial suspension, then termination forty-five days after the full suspension. That forty-five is the section's own breakdown, thirty days of two-way lock plus fifteen. The debt survives the termination, and restoring service after payment takes up to four hours.
The 72-hour rule after registration
One line on the same page applies once registration has been completed: "Chậm nhất 72 giờ kể từ khi hoàn thành đăng ký thông tin thuê bao tại ĐGD, ĐGD lưu động, Điểm DVUQ nếu không kích hoạt sử dụng dịch vụ thì thông tin thuê bao đã đăng ký sẽ bị hủy." Registration is canceled, and the subscriber has to start again as a new customer. The seventy-two hours run from completed registration. A SIM that was never registered is on a different question.
When the registration itself does not match
The same prepaid section states a separate sequence for information that does not match the rules. The action it asks for is to sign the contract again. Outgoing service stops 15 days after the first of those messages, two-way service stops 15 days after that, and the contract ends 30 days after the two-way stop. That count is VinaPhone's. The state timetable for H2H numbers is a different count, on the Vietnam page.
What the page does not settle
Validity itself is not a number this page gives. It says each prepaid subscriber's period depends on the plan registered, the face value of the top-up and what has accumulated, so the length of any particular account is a question for the account. And whether a message reaches a VinaPhone SIM that is sitting abroad is a roaming question the policy page does not address; the Vietnamese identity-verification layer that applies to all networks is on the Vietnam page.
Before you fly
- Find out the account's validity date before you leave, since day zero is that date and not your departure date.
- Put the top-up inside the first ten days, while incoming messages still arrive.
- The 45 days start at the two-way lock. The last fifteen of them need a person at a transaction point with documents.
- If the registration does not match the rules, the sequence above can end the line with credit still on it. The H2H timetable on the Vietnam page is a different count.
