Keep your Ghanaian phone number active while abroad

Keep a Ghanaian number active abroad on MTN's pay-as-you-go terms. Clause 3.8 says shall lose at cancellation. Clause 8.2 says may.

Checked against official pages on October 6, 2026. Rules move; when this one does, it goes on the changelog.

MTN's pay-as-you-go terms print 90 days in two clauses, and the verbs are not the same, so keep a Ghanaian number active abroad by opening the MTN card before you leave. Clause 3.8 reserves the right to suspend and/or cancel, and it says the customer shall lose the number the moment MTN cancels. Clause 8.2 says the customer may lose the number if MTN cancels.

Number for Life is a different MTN page. The help page, timestamped July 02, 2026, marks the choice Reserve Number (Prepaid Only), and it prints 12 months at GHS 15 or 24 months at GHS 25. The AT data-terms address and the Telecel offer pages opened on 6 October 2026 are not the MTN card, so use the MTN card when the SIM is MTN. Open Doors Fast Facts for 2025 prints 12,825 students from Ghana in the United States in 2024/25, 1.1 percent of the total, up 36.5 percent from 9,394 in 2023/24.

What keeps a Ghanaian number active abroad in the two clauses

MTN's pay-as-you-go terms, checked 6 October 2026, in clause 3.8, state: "You shall be required to use our Services at least once within any 90 day period either by making a chargeable call or sending a text message. Should you fail to make a rechargeable call or send a text message within the specified period, we reserve the right to suspend your access to services and/or cancel this Agreement. The moment we cancel this agreement, you shall lose your right to your phone number and any unused Top up credit on the account."

The opening sentence is the use. The sentence after it is the reserved right, and the word there is rechargeable. The sentence after that is the loss of the number, and it begins at the moment MTN cancels the agreement. Shall belongs to that cancellation. A person who was told the number dies on day 90 has folded the loss sentence back onto the use sentence.

Clause 8.2 is later in the same file. The same kind of non-use is one ground in a longer list. After the list, the page says suspension may result in the agreement being canceled, and that if MTN cancels, the customer may lose the phone number and any unused top-up credit. May is the verb there. Clause 3.8 prints Top up with a lowercase u. Clause 8.2 prints Top Up with a capital U. Pakistan is three recharge clocks, at Jazz, Zong and Ufone. Saudi Arabia prints 180 days and 360 days on two stc terms pages, and Virgin Mobile says the account may be closed after 90 consecutive days. The changelog dates this reading.

What the contract names as a call or a text

The 90 day ground inside clause 8.2 names the call and the text again. The same terms list that ground as: "chooses not to use our Services within a 90 day period either by making a chargeable call or sending a text message,"

A chargeable call, in that ground, is a call the customer makes. Sending a text message is a message the customer sends. Whether a message that arrives counts as that use, and whether a call or a text placed while roaming counts, is unverified on the sentence. Someone keeping the line because a bank sends codes still has to read the uses the clause actually names.

The sentence just before the Keep talking heading is the credit sentence. Without sufficient credit, the customer will still be able to receive incoming calls, unless roaming. It sits in the account section, ahead of clause 3.8, and it is about the balance. The 90 day period is the next heading.

Further down, clause 8.4 says MTN may turn messaging services off if they stay inactive for an extended period, and that MTN will let the customer know before that happens. An extended period is the phrase that clause uses. The numbered 90 day grounds are the sentences above it. The options page is where this hold sits next to parking the number or letting it go.

What Number for Life prints for 12 months and 24 months

MTN's Number for Life page, timestamped July 02, 2026, states: "Option 1: Reserve for 12 months at GHS 15 Option 2: Reserve for 24 months at GHS 25"

The help page prints those two options one after the other. Twelve months is GHS 15. Twenty-four months is GHS 25. The twelve-month figure on the card is that printed GHS 15, the help page's price for 12 months. The reservation is the product the reader starts on that page. Clause 3.8 is what the pay-as-you-go terms print when the line is not used. The question at the top of the help page is the help page's own question. It is not clause 3.8.

Clause or page Day count as printed What the page says happens Calls and texts as printed
Clause 3.8 any 90 day period MTN reserves the right to suspend and/or cancel. The customer shall lose the number the moment MTN cancels a chargeable call, or a text message the customer sends
Clause 8.2 a 90 day period, one ground in the suspension list If MTN cancels, the customer may lose the number a chargeable call, or a text message the customer sends
Number for Life 12 months at GHS 15, or 24 months at GHS 25 a confirmation for the selected duration, on the help page unverified

What the help page says once the reservation is completed

The same help page states: "Once completed, you’ll receive a confirmation message, and your number will be secured for the selected duration."

That sentence is the confirmation. The duration is whichever of the two options was selected, 12 months or 24 months. The pay-as-you-go terms quoted above remain the contract.
