Keep your chatr number active while abroad
chatr deactivates a new prepaid account inactive on day 58. After that, three consecutive months below the monthly fee and the number is gone.
Checked against official pages on September 28, 2026. Rules move; when this one does, it goes on the changelog.
Rule at a glance
prepaid accounts only- If you do nothing
- New account deactivated if still inactive on day 58. Thereafter, balance below the monthly plan fee for 3 consecutive months
- Cheapest way to hold it
- A balance at least equal to the monthly plan fee by about 5:00 pm Eastern the day before the anniversary
- Roaming needed to receive codes abroad
- Unverified (The terms suspend services the night before the anniversary when the balance is short. They do not describe incoming texts during that suspend)
- Twelve months away, roughly
- The monthly plan fee deducted on the anniversary. Not a published retention charge
A new chatr prepaid line can be gone before the third month. The terms count from the Activation Date, and they treat a balance below the monthly plan fee as the thing that makes the account inactive.
Day 58, if the account never got going
The terms set that first kill in one paragraph: "For customers activating a new prepaid account, if your account is inactive on day 58 after your initial Activation Date, your account will be deactivated. Your account becomes inactive if your account balance remains at less than the amount of the monthly service fee for your Plan." Inactive means the balance is short of the monthly fee. Day 58 is counted from activation. Once deactivated, the same section says the mobile number assigned to you is lost.
That sentence is for a new prepaid account. It is not Koodo's fifty-eight days for a new activation that is not renewed after the first thirty days of service. Two different documents, two different 58s.
Three consecutive months after that
The same section then changes the test: "Thereafter, if your account balance remains at less than the amount of the monthly service fee for your Plan for 3 consecutive months then your account will be deactivated. Once deactivated, you will lose the mobile number assigned to you." Three consecutive months below the monthly fee. Remaining balance is not refunded. A new SIM and a new number are required to re-activate.
The night before the anniversary
The monthly fee is taken in advance on the Anniversary Date. The terms suspend first: "If your account balance is less than the amount of the monthly service fee for your Plan at approximately 5:00 pm (Eastern Time) on the day before your Anniversary Date, then your Services will be suspended for non-payment and you will not have access to any Services, unless you subscribe to an offer that allows you to maintain access to the chatr network." No access to any Services, unless that named offer is in place. The seven-day Wireless Code floor that sits under this clock is on the Canada page.
Before you fly
- Write down the Activation Date. Day 58 is counted from there on a new account.
- Keep the balance at least equal to the monthly plan fee by about 5:00 pm Eastern the day before the anniversary, or the terms suspend all Services.
- After the new-account window, three consecutive months below that fee is the deactivation the terms state.
- A remaining balance is not refunded after deactivation. The number on this card is chatr's.
