Keep your Nepali phone number active while abroad

Keep a Nepali number active abroad on the carrier's validity table: the Telecommunications Act, 2053 (1997) English compilation we opened does not print a prepaid inactivity day count. The Kathmandu Post of 9 May 2026 reports that NTA deputy director Surya Prasad Lamichhane said operators independently determine validity periods based on international practice and market competition, and leftover rupees can sit while the line is already barred. Ncell's recharge page and Ncell's contact-us FAQ do not share a day 0.

Validity is sold in rupee bands

Ncell and Nepal Telecom each sell a clock in rupees. Ncell's recharge page prints a table: "50 to 99.99" gives "30" days, and "1000 and above" gives "730". The same page caps the pile: "Customers can extend the validity of their main balance up to a maximum of 730 days."

Nepal Telecom's GSM prepaid tariff prints recharge-card validity as "Re. 50" / "25 Days" through "Re. 1000" / "690 Days". On the same page, MPoS starts at "Re. 20-29.99" / "7 Days". A WebFetch of that tariff on 28 September 2026 stopped the MPoS table at Re. 200; curl.exe of the same URL that day returned the rest, through "Re. 1000-above" / "690 Days". Those days are printed validity. They are not a national hold.

The Kathmandu Post, on 9 May 2026, writes: "Nepal's telecommunications regulator, however, has no clear directive requiring operators to extend validity periods for low-income consumers." Lamichhane's quoted sentence on that page is about a fund that has not been used: "There have been discussions about using funds such as the Rural Telecommunications Development Fund to provide concessions for low-income users, but nothing has been implemented yet." India's TRAI rules put a rupee floor under deactivation and a voucher-length cap in the regulation itself. That floor is not this Act file.

Leftover rupees are not the number

Ncell's uninterrupted-service sentence is tied to validity, not to a rupee floor. The same recharge page states: "Prepaid customers can enjoy uninterrupted Ncell services as long as the main balance remains valid." Remaining rupees are not that sentence.

The Kathmandu Post opens with a farmer in Dhading who still had Rs102 and could not make or receive calls. The article then reports Nepal Telecom's spokesperson: "Rabindra Manandhar, spokesperson for Nepal Telecom, said users must recharge once the validity period expires, even if balance remains in the account." His quoted line is the costing, not the leftover: "Validity periods are determined through scientific calculations based on company investment, operational costs and revenue."

Mexico's unused-balance year credits expired pesos onto a recharge made within the following year. Germany's TKG remainder is a refund at contract end. Nepal's live carrier pages we opened sell validity as the product. They do not print a TKG-style payout of leftover rupees.

The number's clock is the carrier's

What happens after validity expires is in the carrier's own file, and Ncell publishes two of them.

Ncell's recharge page continues, and is kept on the Ncell card: "Once the validity of the main balance expires, outgoing calls will be interrupted for 14 days. After 14 days of the interruption of outgoing calls, both incoming and outgoing services will be interrupted." Recharge during that interruption resumes, on that page: "In the event of service interruption, customers can recharge their account at any time using any available recharge medium to resume and enjoy Ncell services once again."

Ncell's contact-us FAQ is a later state. Unused six months: "If you do not use the number for six months, the number goes to Pre-deactivate state. In order to reactivate the number, you can visit nearby Ncell center or Ncell Shop with the valid original document. Reactivation charge is Rs. 100." Those six months are not the 14 days. A shop visit is not a web recharge sentence.

Nepal Telecom's GSM prepaid tariff is the rupee-band table. The page we opened does not print a one-way, two-way or freeze ladder. The Kathmandu Post describes NT as shifting into one-way mode when validity expires, then barring both directions after 30 days. That ladder stays labeled as that newspaper. It is not a sentence on ntc.net.np.

Live Nepal Network, dated 10 Asar 2083 / 24 June 2026, covers a Supreme Court judgment of 25 Poush 2081. No supremecourt.gov.np PDF of that judgment was fetched on 28 September 2026. The newspaper quotes a mandamus sentence: "त्यस्ता ग्राहकहरूको हकमा निजले उल्लेख गरेको निश्चित अवधिसम्म निजले प्रयोग गरेको नम्बर अन्य व्यक्तिलाई प्रदान नगरी यस सन्दर्भमा आवश्यक प्रबन्ध गर्नु/गराउनु,". The Ncell and Nepal Telecom pages we opened do not print a hold-by-notice form.

Nepal Khabar on the same day reports Ncell's written reply that the application form states unused six months inactive and a 180-day claim window, and reports Nepal Telecom's written reply that a number cannot be held indefinitely. Those filings stay off the cards.

The NTA 2077 Bhadra consumer-direction PDF described in that coverage was not fetched on 28 September 2026. A WebFetch of nta.gov.np timed out that day. The Act compilation linked above is the PDF a WebFetch did open.

Smart Cell is not a card this round. Nepal Telecom's C-Phone (CDMA) prepaid page prints a recharge window after validity expiry; that is CDMA, not GSM Namaste, and it is not on the NTC card.

If validity has already expired, can a recharge bring the number back?

On Ncell's recharge page, yes during the interruption that page describes: recharge by any medium resumes service. That sentence does not say leftover rupees are paid out, and it does not reach Pre-deactivate. Pre-deactivate, on contact-us, is a visit with the original document. Nepal Telecom's GSM tariff prints the next band's days. It does not print a resume sentence for a line already past those days.
